Take it away Sarah

I am Sarah Tucker. I am from Leigh on Sea, in Essex, and I have 2 children. Sienna who is 6 and Joshua who is 3.

Why did you start this project?

I started The Mortgage Mum because I wanted to use my platform to make a difference. I saw that the balance I enjoyed working as a mortgage broker, from home, and being there for my kids for school runs and school shows etc was extremely rare. I needed to earn a decent income, but I wanted flexibility to be home for my children. Being a mortgage broker gave me that; and I wondered if I could use it as a blue print to help other women around the UK achieve the same thing.

Where does your passion come from?

I think it’s my star sign! My passion comes from wanting to achieve. Wanting to constantly evolve and grow. Wanting to be successful. I have always believed in the law of attraction and goal setting has always worked really well for me. It’s an amazing feeling to set your sights on something and then to see yourself achieve it.

What motivates you to do what you do?

Wanting to make a real difference. Wanting to support other women and facilitate change.

What are some everyday challenges you are facing in your venture and as a mum?

The juggle, and sometimes the struggle, of multiple demands!!! School lists, birthday parties, washing, homework and events make home life busy. Add a business on top and sometimes it’s enough to tip you over the edge! BALANCE is the word I strive for. Most of the time I have it, but I have to manage it closely as it can quickly change. I do “Miracle Morning” every day and this has helped me so much as I feel balanced going into the day.

Which new skills have you learned since starting your business?

Gosh, so many! Running a business is an education, I was so naïve to it! A bit like being a Mother – you underestimate it and until you’re doing it yourself you can never really know what it takes! I have learnt to hold your vision clear and remind yourself WHY you are doing this. That reason needs to be strong enough to keep you moving forward.

What specific mistakes did you make which kept you stuck and struggling?

Perfectionism. Wanting everything to be “just so”. Impossible. You can’t know what you need until you need it. When I get overwhelmed I notice me NEEDING my home tidy and clean at all times, I notice myself needing my to do lists empty…. That’s how I know I am creeping into that place. I have to get my therapy “tools” and get to work on pulling myself back in balance when that happens. I usually have a quarterly “crisis” where I lose my mind, usually have some sort of anxiety attack, and then reset. I’d like to work on that!

Please share a quote which fires you up.

She believed she could so she did.

What are your future aspirations?

Personally, in my singing career I aspire to sing at the Royal Albert Hall one day. I want to continue writing and recording my own music. I also want to write a book that will inspire others. Professionally, I want to have 100 Mortgage Mums all over the UK, enjoying a balanced flexible family life and freeing their current set-ups to change if they so wish! I want to be on This Morning talking about mortgages and money mindset – think the female Martin Lewis!!! We need a woman who can talk about this stuff too on TV! I want to make a mark in flexible working so other industries can follow suit, and I want The Mortgage Mum to have it’s own podcast one day.

Could you share with our audience a book that changed your life?

Daring Greatly. Brene Brown. It got me on The Voice.

Is there any course or a mentor you would recommend, who helped you ?

Keri Jarvis – Get Shift Faced and Thrive! Changed my life. Got me on The Voice, got me The Mortgage Mum – Keri brought me home to myself and she’s still encouraging me now!

Would you share with us 3 lessons you have learned running your own business?

*Know the WHY. Know your worth. And don’t let anyone make you question it.
* It is hard work. But like mothering, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
*You have to be disciplined with your time and make sure you still take care of yourself. Self development and self care become essential!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would say “Sarah you are going to learn so much. About yourself, about others, about your faith. It will all make you a better person, even the tough bits. And there is going to be some amazing moments. Make sure you enjoy those! They don’t last forever and you’ll miss them when they pass. Keep listening, keep tuning in, and for goodness sake please believe in yourself.” She wouldn’t listen, just like I didn’t (and sometimes still don’t)…. We have to be our younger self to be who we are now, and no matter what we think we would do differently we just have to learn through experience and emotion to truly evolve and change!

What does success look like for you?

Happiness. I used to list all the material aspects of success. But the word abundance fits better for me now. An abundance of love, memories, relationships, connections. An abundance of choice, wealth, experiences, holidays. Abundance of all things that mean a lot to me. That’s what success looks like. Not the Porsche, huge house and handbags I once craved…. Though I am sure I’d still like a few of these!

Let’s brag about a few of your achievements.

I appeared on The Voice UK 2019 and got 4 turns in my blind audition – the most incredible moment of my life. My biggest manifestation! Will I Am told me I was one of the best singers to ever appear on The Voice, and in the next round I narrowly missed a spot in the semi-final. To say I was devastated is an understatement. It broke me.

The Mortgage Mum was set up amidst my pain, to try and create something pure and good from my experience. It was hard work, especially as it often felt like an internal struggle – I’d gone from singing with the best, going to and from ITV for 7 months, to setting up a business from scratch with no real experience… and it felt like everyone was watching me.

It was HARD! BUT I knew in my gut I had to keep going and now I am so glad I did. The singing was waiting for me as soon as I was ready and now I have fulfilled another life ambition by joining the London Community Gospel Choir. That is a DREAM.

Let’s take a look at your blind audition and your incredible voice.

How was your experience on The Voice UK?

It was UNREAL. Amazing. Realising a childhood dream is like nothing else. It was everything I hoped it would be while I was doing it. I will never forget it. The experience off camera is just as magical, if not more so, than the on camera memories. People don’t see the work that goes into it behind the scenes. I loved every second!
